What is Combat Tai Chi?

When we say Combat Tai Chi we are actually referring to Tai Chi Chuan. Chuan means Fist. All Tai Chi started out as Combat Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan. We tend to say Combat Tai Chi rather than just Tai Chi because although the direct translation is fist in the case of Combat Tai Chi fist refers to the idea of combative use much more than any specific reference to an actual fist.

tai-chi-combat-36Over the last 50 years or so some Tai Chi instructors dropped the Martial Tai Chi fighting principles from their art and started calling their art just Tai Chi without the Chuan. The idea was to allow practitioners to learn and work on the health and healing while leaving out the martial aspects of Combat Tai Chi.

The problem is that the Combat Tai Chi moves/forms have specific internal and external applications that are also the correct uses for health and healing with Tai Chi. Without these applications the art truly is not Combat Tai Chi and it is not able to impart the amazing internally healthy Tai Chi benefits either because the mechanical and energetic principles are not understood and so are not being worked in the movements.

Combat Tai Chi involves all aspects of self defense with Tai Chi. Combat Tai Chi also includes the healing aspects. However, when we say Combat Tai Chi on our videos and materials we tend to just put the Martial aspects of the Tai Chi on that DVD or video. So, the student who wants Combat Tai Chi can specifically obtain and work on that.

fighting-with-tai-chiIf the student wants the health aspects of Tai Chi then they can study that aspect by itself also. However, in our regular curriculum you will find the health and healing is mixed right in with the self defense and it is very easy to see that Combat Tai Chi and Tai Chi are one and the same.

So, the point I am making here is that although Combat Tai Chi and Tai Chi for health can be studied separately they must be studied together at least to some degree in order for the student to really understand the material.

  4. Aloha
I live on the island of Maui, Hawaii.
I have been iterested in combat Tai Chi for many years but can find no local instructors.
In attempts to study on my own ( as there is no “complete” Tai Chi instruction ie; combat/martial applications/forms as well as health) l have realized my need for an instructor and the presence of a master in order to gain real knowledge and skill.
Although l have met with some success through my own studies ( in application Tai Chi really does work and l know nothing!)
At 58 yrs old l am dealing with aging and some health issues including arthritic conditions and am tired of western medecine’s depency on drugs and surgery.
They have only led me to a very bad place.
The question l have is this.
Are there any viable instructors of complete Combat Tai Chi in my area? If there are please may l be put in touch with them.
If not, please suggest how l may consider furthering my studies without a master or instructor to correct bad habits before they form! Footwork! Breath controll and application! Push hands! ( no buddy to play push hands with! I have never done it!!! ( however what l have tried in api ation works beautifully!)
BTW l am not one that looks for situations but being a rock bass player tends to have those situations crop up now and then in one’s work environment and l am often the only one in the band with any martial training ( l am a combat grappler/wrestler) and have had occassion
to try some of the simpler things l have practiced at length and felt confident in ie; brush knee and twist, parting the horses mane. White Crane spreads wings.
I am quite sure l am still missing on several points…!
Anyway… I hope there is some hope!
Got any instructors/masters that want to move to Maui?
    And in an aside…
I am a producer of music as well. My partner ( a mixed martial artist who l am trying to tslk into playing push hands… Your videos should help there!) and l produce music for video, commercials, games, movies, hip hop artists, intro music for pro mma fighters, etc. etc.
If you ever require or think you might require such services kindly let us know!
(last year we produced one of the theme songs for the Kansas City Chiefs!) ( not reslly a football fan but stoked!)
Mahalo Nui Loa! A hui ho!!!
( thank you very much, untill we gather and speak again!)

      Hi Don,

Our distance learning program is available in DVD format, and we have even more material being put on our member site. The program was designed to be learned effectively in these formats. Sigung Clear has sought out high-level training from a variety of accomplished Grand Masters, and the training we offer is truly unique. There are very few people who are qualified to teach our program, so finding a live instructor in your area probably won’t help you. If you are looking for additional in-person instruction, I would recommend you visit us for a workshop or private lesson. If you have a group of interested players, you could arrange to host us for one in Maui. This is a distance program, but it never hurts to get a live “tune-up” from Sigung Clear, and even one workshop will help you to jump start your training.

  5. ( Sifu?) Clear I have studied arts that are close to the one’s you have, Please excuse me if your title is not Sifu, I have Never Understood what Penchak or Kuntao Silat actuallt is. The thing I admire about you is you’re complete explanations when teaching, anything. I have Been Focused on Yang Style taichi for the better part of 7 years, and reached out to one of my Prospective instructors, asking Him about some Esoteric Parts and Special (KUNGS) Skills that may be attained. We all (Martial artists) Constantly Hear about these amazing skill, But at the Same time, We are told that they are becoming Extinct and that Many already Have. So I have been asking around about Vibration Palm, Dragon’s Breath Palm, One Finger Etc. The answers I got Were, They are contained in SOME of the Forms, BUT they ARE NOT IMPORTANT!! That IRKs ME No END, and I have noticed By watching you That you must Definitely Know Vibration Palm at the Least, By the way you are always Explaining about Wave energy. If the Skills are RARE and Almost EXTINCT Why would someone Tell you that they are not important!!?? I Believe that every art Should be totally Preserved even down to the slightest Explanation, Its Bad enough that we have Lost Many things through translation and the Old rule of only passing Down by ORAL tradition. I want to Keep a Clear and Correct Record of the Most Meticulous Compilation Known To Make sure these things are Preserved, Which I Believe is being done By a select Few. But I also Believe that Pride and Selfishness Has alot to do with What I’m Speaking about, How Many Ignorant Masters took things to their Graves, Just for the sake of Not Letting even their Top Closed door Disciples, Learn them for fear of being Upstaged or Defeated by them. It all came from Fear, and I believe That People like Earl Montaigue, George Dillman and Seiyu Oyata were on the right track by Exposing these Fine Skills But I do believe that a whole Lot More of Screening of Students should have taken Place. But with The Execption of Earl Montaigue(RIP) the Others basically Commercialized it and Cashed in on it. I have A Friend that I taught a simple technique to (ST 9) and he was walking around Picking Fights and Using it, even when I taught him I did’nt Bring him to full knockout, Just enough to make him extremely Dizzy and he had to sit down. When he asked me to show him More I Gracefully avoided it, Telling Him that he had to work on His Character. So Sifu Is there something that I may Purchase From you that can help me attain What I seek? If so Please let me Know, and I will order it and Probably More. I am In the Process of getting back into the best shape of my life at 52, But Thank God, Everything is coming back to me fairly Quickly, The hardest part is losing My waist(LOL) and I also thank you for your making the 50 min webinar Possible for all of us Keep up all the great work you are doing, God Bless you and Yours and I will await your message, I know you are busy. Thank You, and be well, Jim

    • Hi Jim, Thank you. Glad you enjoy or stuff.

Yeah, it’s unfortunate that many folks don’t teach as openly as they could. Everyone would benefit if more teachers would share completely and openly.

For the stuff you’re interested in I highly recommend starting with our Internal Iron Palm video. This builds the foundation of vibrating palm.

…and start working our Internal Push Hands method as this will give you the training method for many of the advanced palms and how to direct the power of your strikes to specific targets inside your opponent.

The Internal Iron package is a great way to learn this and includes a whole bunch of related skills that will enhance and amplify what you’re doing with the Internal Iron Palm training and push hands.

  8. Hugh Taylor says

Hi, have you got any videos of using tai chi in real time combat? I cant seem to find any anywhere… Regards

    • Matt Holker says

      Hello Hugh,

Footage of real Tai Chi in real combat is rare. What we do have is some footage of a guy who HAS used Tai Chi in real combat doing a demonstration of how Tai Chi fights. Check out these clips:

  9. Jenny Pierce says

Is there an age limit to Tai Chi I would like to learn both aspects of it but I am 63yrs old female who has become afraid of being attacked by man or woman the latter more so because I am getting verbal abuse from one particular 32yrs old individual and as of last night her 17yrs old daughter too

    • Hi Jenny,

There is no age limit to Tai Chi, and you can absolutely learn it at 63. That said, the fighting method takes a long time to learn. Given that you are facing a clear and present threat, I would advise you to train the Clear Defense method. It is the most powerful and effective self defense method we have ever found. It is simple and fast to learn, and we have taught it to men and women in their 70s and 80s. And it comes directly from the Tai Chi movements. If you need realistic self defense right now, Clear Defense is the program you should start with. You can find out more here:

  10. do you teach weapons?

    • Matt Holker says

We have a complete curriculum in Tai Chi, from rank beginner to Master. So in other words, Yes! The weapons training rapidly imparts many sought-after Tai Chi skills at the higher levels of the training.

  11. Steven Angius says

Hi, I just have a couple questions about your Combat Tai Chi system. Does it have any body conditioning methods as well? And also, what’s the difference between your DVD’s on this system and the one that is on the TRS website?
